This is Britain Terms & Conditions

The Basics of This is Britain

  1. This is Britain is a nationwide crowd-sourced photography project that aims to shoot, edit, design, print and publish a 2017 Christmas book in just twelve days – all in aid of BBC Children in Need.

  2. We are calling on the Great British public to take a snapshot of British society as it is today over a three-day period – Friday 20th, Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd October 2017.

  3. The most engaging pictures will be selected by Rankin, one of our most iconic photographers, to appear – alongside images taken by some of the nation’s leading photographers and photojournalists – in a This Is Britain coffee table book that we will make available to buy through Photobox during November 2017.  All profits will be donated to BBC Children in Need.

  4. These Terms & Conditions govern participation in This Is Britain.  Read them carefully: by submitting a photograph, you are agreeing to them.

The Process

  1. You can submit an original digital photograph to This Is Britain by uploading it at https://www.thisisbritain.me/submit/, meeting all format, resolution or other requirements we specify there.

  2. Submissions may be made between 00.01 on Friday 20th October 2017 and 23..59 on Sunday 22nd October 2017.

  3. Your photograph should have been taken on Friday 20th, Saturday 21st or Sunday 22nd October 2017, and relate to one of the fourteen This Is Britain themes.  We may in our discretion eliminate photographs that do not appear to us to have been taken on those dates.

  4. When submitting your photograph, you will be required to provide:

    1. Your name;

    2. The location depicted in your photograph;

    3. The time and date when your photograph was taken; and

    4. A description of your photograph.

  5. To participate in This Is Britain you must be:

  1. a United Kingdom resident; and

  2. at least 18 years of age.

  1. Both amateur and professional photographers are invited to participate.

  2. We will use the email address you supply to contact you with information about the progress of This Is Britain, including as to whether or not your photograph has been selected for inclusion.  You should ensure that you check that email address regularly, and that it remains a valid address.  We aim to let you know whether your photograph has been selected for inclusion in This Is Britain between 2nd November - 5th November 2017.

  3. Photographs will be assessed as to their suitability for inclusion in This Is Britain by the This Is Britain team – with the final decision resting with Rankin, who will decide, in his own judgement, which photographs provide the best or most appropriate representations of the This is Britain themes.  His and our decisions are final.

  4. To assist you in taking the best photograph you can for This Is Britain, take a look at Rankin’s photography masterclass.

  5. We may, in our discretion, require participants to confirm, by way of signature in writing, their agreement to matters referred to in these Terms & Conditions as a condition of their photograph’s inclusion in This Is Britain.

  1. You authorise us, should we wish, to include the information referred to at paragraph 8 above, as adapted by us in our discretion, in the This Is Britain book or in conjunction with other uses we make of your photograph.

    1. on the This Is Britain site;

    2. in emailed newsletters;

    3. in press and other media releases; and

    4. in social media postings and interactions,

  2. We may add title and other descriptors of our choosing to participating photographs.

  3. You grant us and our affiliated companies a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, adapt, distribute, publish and communicate to the public any photograph you submit to This Is Britain:
